A word of warning: Watch your step! The streets of Algiers Point, like many older neighborhoods of New Orleans, are not level and often have holes, bumps, and dips. They sometimes look like a mini-earthquake scene. The roots of those beautiful shady trees are often to blame.
The 19th century village atmosphere, historic architecture, eccentric touches, and friendly residents make this neighborhood a pleasure to explore.
Start the Algiers Point walking tour from the Algiers/Canal Street ferry landing which offers a great view of the river and downtown New Orleans. Don't go down the stairs yet. Turn right toward the statute of Louis Armstrong. This is the start of the Jazz Walk of Fame on the top of the levee. The walkway includes memorials to musical greats from New Orleans. Walk as far as you like and then come back to Satchmo's statute.
