Bridge Tolls and the Ferry

By

A concern for continued New Orleans ferry service, which is currently being subsidized by bridge tolls, has become part of the debate over whether the tolls should expire.

Latest Developments

About 100 people showed up at a town meeting to support the ferry, stressing its practical use for downtown commuters, economic importance especially to historic Algiers and viabiity as alternate transportation for security reasons and if bridge travel is disrupted, including after natural disasters (such as Katrina which destroyed other area bridges).

Background

The downtown ferry, like the streetcar, is more than just a mode of transportation to many locals. It even has its own fan club and festival.
