Calendar of Events - March in New Orleans

March 2012 in New Orleansis packed with events, including lots of actual marching in St. Patrick, Italian, and even dog parades.. And parades aren't the only way the Irish and Italian patron Saints are celebrated. There are block parties, green beer, and St. Joseph altars.

Other March events include the New Orleans Marathon and Half Marathon (And Kids RUn), a literary festival and a children's international themed fair celebrating the 2012 Olympics.

Dog Day Afternoon

March 25, 2012 - City Park

The Louisiana SPCA's annual Dog Day Afternoon is a major date on the canine social calendar.  The all-day  event starts at 10:30 am and features The Gatsby Strut walk-a-thon, music, food, specialty drinks, dog obedience demos, pet vendors, artists, dog contests and prizes.  Over 2000 people and dogs attend each year. Bach Around the Clock

Bach Around the Clock starts Friday, March 23, 2012 at 7 pm and goes non-stop until Saturday, March 24 at midnight, with music, dance, drama and more by over 300 performers

Spring Fiesta

Every year the Spring Fiesta includes two weekends of unique home tours in historic New Orleans neighborhoods as well as a beautiful carriage parade where the fancy-dressed riders throw live flowers. March 23 - April 1, 2012

Tennessee Williams Festival

The Tennessee Williams Literary Festival in New Orleans is very literary - with authors, writers, industry insiders, scholars, etc - but there is also music, foodie events, celebrity talks, theater, and more --- Including the Stella - Stanley Yelling Contest finale. Mostly in the French Quarter; March 22 - 25, 2012.

Pyrate Week

Pyrate Week or Pirate Week in New Orleans includes a Friday evening parade and much much more. It's actually more than a week. Pyrate Week is always from the last weekend in March through the first weekend of April. Arrrgggg!

Algiers Friendship Day

March 11, 2012 - Johnny's Bar, Olivier St. at the River and the River Road in Algiers Point

The Algiers Irish Rebels and Friendship Club will be a part of St Patrick's Day parading, but first it hosts an Irish flavored Algiers Friendship party with crowds that spill into the street, which is painted with shamrocks, and also onto the Mississippi River levee. Noon - 4 pm.

Rock 'n Roll Marathon & Half Marathon

On Sunday, March 4, 2012, the Rock ‘n Roll New Orleans Marathon & ½ Marathon, which benefits the American Cancer Society, over 20,000 runners will see New Orleans and enjoy live local bands along the run route. (This run was previously called the Mardi Gras Marathon & Half Marathon.)

The 2012 race will debut a new start line on Poydras Street. Both the full and half-marathon run together for over 12 miles and experience historic St. Charles Avenue, the French Quarter and City Park. The marathon runners also run along Lake Ponchatrain's Lakeshore Drive.

City Park's Roosevelt Mall, behind the New Orleans Museum of Art, is the finish line and party site, which will feature music from Rockin’ Dopsie & The Zydeco Twisters.

A two-person half-marathon relay is perfect for runners looking for an introduction to distance running or a chance to share the race with a friend or family member. The first runner will take on approximately 8 miles before exchanging the baton with their partner, who will finish off the final 5 miles. Registration is limited to 500 teams. Road Food Fest

The New Orleans Road Food Fest is four French Quarter blocks of unique food from around the country. This year its on Saturday March 24, 2012.

More Marathon Weekend: Kids Rock Fun Run & Health Fair

Kids Run: On March 3, 2012, the day before the Rock 'n Rock marathon, kids in grades K-7 can participated in ING KiDS ROCK New Orleans Fun Run, a non-timed, non-competitive run in City Park. All participants receive a T-shirt, goodie bag and finisher’s medal. Registration and more information can be found on-line.

Expo: The race weekend starts with a Free Health & Fitness Expo with at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center on Friday and Saturday, March 2-3, 2012.
