Chewbacchus at Comic Con New Orleans

The Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus, a real Mardi Gras sci-fi krewe, held a mini Mardi Gras parade of sci-fi characters at the Comic Con several times a day.

Chewbacchus debuted at Comic Con and then held its very first parade during Mardi Gras in 2011. It was a huge success. The 2012 parade is set for February 18th followed by the krewe's ball.

Chewbacchus is part of a trend of DYI parades during Mardi Gras. These are not the typical Mardi Gras parade of huge floats being pulled by tractorsas tons of cheap Chinese beads rain into the crowds.

These are smaller, more human-sized event with an emphasis on wit, fun and creativity. Chewbacchus has hand-crafted "parade contraptions", costumes and throws. The spirit, satire, and creativity harken back to "the true meaning of Mardi Gras" and bringing it back to the grassroots and the street.

The Galactic Krewe of Chewbacchus bans motorized gas vehicles and welcomes all costumes, floats, and participants with some sort of science fiction theme. It's not just Star Wars, Star Trek, or space creatures.
