"Dueling Barges" and other firework shows on the Mississippi are set to patriotic music that can be watched from the banks or from several steamboat "fireworks cruises."

Maafa Presented By Ashé Cultural Arts Center at Congo Square in Louis Armstrong Park

The term "Maafa" comes from the Swahili term for disaster. It is also known as the African Holocaust or Holocaust of Enslavement and references the 500 years of African suffering in slavery and exploitation. Participants don white clothing and gather in Congo Square for 6:30 a.m., then make a drum procession through the French Quarter, which passes by the slave exchange and then proceeds on to the riverfront for a closing ceremony that includes spoken word and drumming.

The Patriotic Project @ Trinity Episcopal Church
This free concert features over 160 children from all over the state directed by Dr. Valerie Jones-Francis. 2 p.m. at 1329 Jackson Ave.

Or just celebrate the 4th with the American ritual of baseball. 6 p.m. at the Zephyrs Stadium, 6000 Airline Drive, Metairie.
