What could be more romantic than getting married on Valentines Day? There are at least two easy matrimonial options that offer something special on February 14th:

Scotland’s Gretna Green and our local Gretna, which was reportedly named after the Scottish town, are both known for elopements or runaway marriages. On Valentine’s Day, our Gretna welcomes couples with a romantic and historic runaway wedding at the Gretna Green Blacksmith Shop. Couples will follow a Scottish piper to the “marrying judge”. After the legalities, the blacksmith will seal the vows on the anvil, an old tradition in Scotland’s Gretna Green. Special certificates and proclamations will also be issued celebrating the day.

Contact the Clerk of Court in Gretna about getting a marriage license at 504.364.2922 and the office of the “marrying judge”, Justice of the Peace Vernon J. Wilty,III, at 504.364.2760, to schedule the wedding after you pop the question.

Courthouse weddings with the Valentine’s Day vibe and personalized ceremonies are held on February 14 at the historic Algiers Courthouse, in Algiers Point right across from the ferry. The “Love Judge”, K.K. Norman, devotes much of her court day to marrying about 10 -15 couples on Valentine’s Day every year and her staff creates a festive romantic atmosphere. The court also issues marriage licenses. Call 504.368.4099 for more information and to schedule.
