A movie filmed here is Louisiana, aka Hollywood South, "Beasts of the Southern Wild", is already getting Oscar buzz after winning several prestigious awards.
The critically acclaimed movie premiered here in New Orleans this month (June, 2012) with a traditional Hollywood style, red carpet premier at the new Joy Theatre.
"Beasts of the Southern Wild" has already been honored at the Sundance Film Festival this spring winning the dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the Cinematography Award. The film also won the Camera d'Or for Best First Film by the director Benh Zeitlin at the Cannes Film Festival in France.
Louisiana is writ large all over this production, both on screen and behind the camera. There are lots of Louisiana people involved in the creation of this film. In fact Zeitlin, a New Yorker, is an unusual non-Louisiana native exception. He and Lucy Alibar were co-writers of the film.
The movie itself is set and filmed in Louisiana. The stars are native Louisiana folk, who may go from unknown to global stardom with this movie.
The story of the film is Hushpuppy's. It's a magical realism epic tale. Hushpuppy is a six-year-old Louisiana bayou girl who deals with "epic catastrophes", storms, an ill father, and "wild animals" who are both real and imagined..
Hushpuppy is played by Quvenzahne Wallis of Houma, which happens to be a nice day trip from New Orleans into real life bayou country..
In a TV interview,Quvenzahne claimed to mostly play herself while acting in the movie, noting difference like how dirty here character got and her dealings with all of the animals. Quvenzahne said the movie may make you happy, scared, sad or...
The way New Orleanian Dwight Henry got his starring role as Wink, Hushpuppy's dad, could be another Hollywood movie. He owns the Buttermilk Drop Bakery and Cafe in the historic New Orleans neighborhood of Treme. The movie people patronized the cafe and recruited Mr. Henry for the film.
"Beasts of the Southern Wild" opens in the New Orleans area on July 4, 2012. Add it to your list of things to do this summer.
