Tonight the Semifinals - Tomorrow the Superdome! Tonight's Louisiana prep football contests will decide which teams will play in the championship games in New Orleans Superdome on Dec. 8, 2012.
Metro New Orleans is sure to have a high school team in the big game for the top Prep Class 5A championship. Either the Mandeville High Skippers or the Archbiship Rummel Raiders will be in the Superdome game. Those two teams compete tonight at Joe Yenni Stadium in East Jefferson Parish at 7 p.m. The victor will take on the winner of the West Monroe and Barbe match also being held tonight.
I'll be pulling for the Skippers.
Full disclosure: My nephew, Matt Nungesser, is a Skipper defense back star. And that's not just my biased opinion. Matt was Scholar Athlete of the Week on local TV, named top defensive player after the Mandeville Homecoming game. And in an interview, his coach called him the smartest guy on the team. (Did I mention, he's also a 4.0+ student.) In just last week's game, Matt "reeled in a game-clinching interception" as reported in the Times-Picayune newspaper. Matt's also a big team-player, so more about the team.
The Skippers are 10 and 2. But one of the "2" was Baton Rouge Catholic's win the first game of the season. And the Skippers played them again last week and won.
The Raiders are ranked higher and go into the semifinal game undefeated. It should be a tough and exciting game.
Neither the Skippers or the Raiders have ever been Louisiana champs. Rummel played in the finals once just a few years ago. The Skippers were in the semifinals last year which was the first time in its history.
The Finals of the other Prep Football leagues will also play tonight for a spot in Superbowl championship games.
In Class 4A, there a chance that two local teams will play each other in the game which would really ramp up the excitement in the Superbowl game. The dream NOLA championship game is Karr v McDonogh 38. If that happens, the 4A champion will be a New Orleans public high school for sure. If that doesn't happen, it's hoped that one of the teams will make the Superdome round and win.
The semifinal game of Karr v. Holy Cross will be played at Karr's home, Behrman Stadium in Algiers. New Orleans' McDonogh 38 will play at Neville.
Tonight's other class matches - some with other local high school teams in the running for the champion games - are:
Notre Dame at East Feliciana
Livonia at Parkview Baptist
Springfield v John Curtis (Muss Bertolino venue)
University Lab at Evangeline
Kentwood at Ouachita Christian
West St. John at Haynesville
