The Nina, the Pinta, but not the Santa Maria

Replicas of the Nina and the Pinta, two of  three ships that Christopher Columbus led to the New World, are coming to Cajun Louisiana.  They will be part of the Mardi Gras or Carnival season attractions in Houma this month, February 17 -26, 2012.   That's an easy day-trip from New Orleans. Find out more about the ships and the experience of a visit at the Columbus Foundation website.

BTW, if you need a job or have dreamed of working on such a sailing ship, the website also describes opportunities to become a member of the ships crew, paid or volunteer.

The Nina claims to be the most historically accurate replica of the historic ship and was build with only hand tools.  The Pinta was recently build to join the Nina on her travels.  Maybe next time they visit, a Santa Maria vessel will be added.

The ships, a mobile floating museum, will be on display and open for tours  at Houma's Downtown Marina.   Self-guided tours are $6-$8; less for group tours.  The Nina and the Pinta will sail away on February 27 to visit Texas.  They will return to Louisiana to Lake Charles, April 27 - May 8, 2012, for the annual Contraband Days event.
